Factory Direct, 2004
Yellow, red and pink petals from roses grown at Pinchbeck Rose Farm were released into three different bodies of water, Lake Rescue in the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Maine and Rhode Island. The floating rose petals provide visual evidence of the waters’ rhythms, forming drawings that morph in time with the currents. The flower offering’s observes and reveres nature’s patterns, and pays homage to the inherent creative and destructive power of the natural world.
In 2004, Artspace organized artist residencies at 13 factories in the Greater New Haven, CT area. Bringing together the creativity of art with the innovation and productive energy of industry, the residencies gave artists and local manufacturers the unprecedented opportunity to collaborate. Jennifer Zackin worked with Pinchbeck Roses in Guilford, CT.
The result is Factory Direct: New Haven, an exhibition of new artwork that captures the history, community, materials, processes, and products of the host factories through sound, images, video, and interactive installations.
