I’m delighted to invite you to a public tree-wrapping program at Spiral House Park over Memorial Day weekend. This hands-on community event is part of Celebration of Trees, bringing participants together to create a sculptural installation that honors the park’s woodland environment.

Tree-wrapping at Spiral House Park is a collaborative weaving process in nature. Participants gather to wrap lengths of rope around a standing deceased tree—similar to a Maypole—transforming it into a living, evolving sculpture. Rather than using a traditional loom, the tree itself becomes the structure, anchoring a vortex form shaped through collective movement and response. As participants circle the tree, the work develops organically, guided by many hands rather than a single author.

This process emphasizes interconnection, shared authorship, and care for ecological systems. Extending beyond the studio, the project functions as a form of social sculpture—where the environment itself becomes the artwork. It reflects Spiral House Park’s philosophy of integrating art, nature, and sacred geometry, inviting participants to slow down, attune to the land, and co-create something larger than themselves.

Spiral House Park is a truly special place. Over four decades, the late artist Tom Gottsleben and his wife Patty Livingston transformed an abandoned bluestone quarry into a landscape of remarkable beauty. The 45-acre park features gardens, open fields, woodland trails, and stone and crystal glass sculptures, all set against sweeping views of the Catskill Mountains. At its center stands a five-story spiral house. Opened to the public in 2025, the park offers a unique setting to gather and celebrate the connection between art, nature, and community.

More details on timing will be announced soon—stay tuned.
