Coca Bird

Coca Bird (2006) 

Coca Bird is a wall installation composed of several hundred coca leaves forming an image of a pre-Columbian bird symbol.

Jennifer Zackin’s time in Peru has deeply influenced both her life and artistic practice. In Peruvian culture, the coca plant holds sacred significance; traditionally, people chew coca leaves together during social gatherings or government meetings as a form of communion—a ritual of unity and blessing. Coca Bird serves as a personal symbol and recurring motif in Zackin’s work. She hopes that those who view the piece will experience a sense of belonging.
